Between 1995 - 2001, there were 269 drownings. Only 6 of these drownings were at homes that had pool fences and latched gates. 70% of the victims were under 5 years old and 62% of the children died in a backyard pool.

NONE OF THE SAFETY PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET WILL DO A BETTER JOB OF PREVENTING AN ACCIDENT THAN CONSTANT, CONTINUOUS AND UNINTERRUPTED SUPERVISION OF SMALL CHILDREN AROUND THE POOL

TIPS TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE AROUND THE POOL

Regularly check that the gate latches securely and that the spring mechanisms work properly. Regularly oil the hinges and latches.
Don't allow children to play in the pool area. Remove all toys, tricycles - anything a child might want to get - from the vicinity.
Post CPR instructions and the 911 emerency number in the pool area.
Keep life saving equipment such as a pole, life preserver and rope in the pool area. Hang them from the fence so pwople won't trip on them.
PARENT TO CHILD RATIOS: For every single kid who is five years old or younger, there needs to be a parent in the pool. For every kid ages 6-8, there needs to be a parent at least poolside. For children nine and older, there needs to be a designated water watcher at all times.
Have a phone handy in the pool area. Do NOT answer the phone while your children are in the pool. Use the phone only to 911 should a problem occur.
Post rules such as "No Running" "No Pushing" "No Drinking" and "Never Swim Alone". ENFORCE THE RULES.
Don't rely on swimming lessons or "floaties" to protect your children in the water.
Attend a CPR class. Make suree your babysitter also knows CPR.
